Engineer/Paramedic Ricky Godoy of the Novato Fire Department and Sergeant Derrick Young of the Novato Police Department were selected by their chiefs and honored at the Annual RCI Service Above Self Awards Ceremony. Both men represent the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" for their outstanding contributions to their departments. Each of their chiefs detailed their accomplishments and why they were selected. Local dignitaries including Novato Mayor Rachel Farac, Supervisor Dennis Rodoni, and other city officials were on hand to join in the recognition. The entire club gave the honorees a standing ovation in recognition of their achievements.

RCI recognized Justin Bradley, Owner of Chick-fil-A Novato, for his ongoing support of our club. He has overseen the donation of Chick-fil-A sandwiches for our Golf Fundraiser, our multi-club social and other club events. His tireless support earned him the coveted "Service Above Snoopy (Self)" Award. We are grateful for Justin's support and are sorry to see him relocating to his home state of Georgia to own/manage a store in Savannah. Our loss is their gain. But Justin assures us that the new store manager will be equally supporting of the Novato community.
Kate Johnston, docent at Hamilton Air Base, gave the club the fascinating origin story and history of the base. While many cities competed to call this base home, the people of Novato rallied and the site chosen in the early 1930s. The further history and memorable figures were brought to life with her engaging stories. The base was decommissioned in 1975 but now houses planned community with residential, commercial, open space, and civic uses. Hamilton remains an important historical and community asset of Novato and Marin County.
Five scholarship recipients were honored at the most recent Rotary Club meeting. They are all graduating seniors from Novato area high schools who show exceptional promise. Each spoke of their plans for the future. RCI establishes a scholarship fund from money raised for deserving students to help them on their way to success. We are happy to help and support these amazing young men and women.

Eddy Cumins, GM of SMART train, shared the success the program has attained in the past few years. Ridership has dramatically increased both during the week and weekends. Additionally, use of the bike/walk ways has grown. On nearly all metrics SMART is exceeding expectations and performing well ahead of comparable transit systems across the country. Plans for expansion to Healdsburg are on "track" to finish by the end of 2028. Free ridership for students and seniors will continue for another year.
All in all, an excellent report card and very well received.
The RCI project to renovate the garden at Novato High School was officially "handed-off" to the school with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Dozens of students, faculty, Novato Chamber and club members were in attendance. The students honored the club with a beautiful redwood plaque they designed and produced. The school garden club is already growing several varieties of vegetables. We're happy to have helped, enjoy the partnership with the school and look forward to the "fruits" of their efforts.
