Dr. John McQuaid from the Veterans' Administration shared history of, and treatments for, PTSD. While PTSD can happen outside of military service, it is most often associated with combat trauma. Dr. McQuaid took the club through case studies working with traumatized patients and how he addressed their individual issues. Really fascinating stories from the front lines of this challenging psychiatric malady. The group was most impressed with his work and appreciate his taking the time to share it with us.

Welcome to our Club!
Rotary Club of Ignacio celebrated its 50th Anniversary in style. The evening was highlighted with a video of many former presidents reminiscing about their time with the club and detailing what makes this a special organization. Nearly 100 guests from current and former district officers to club members and their partners people sipped sparkling wine, dined, socialized and learned--from the undefeated club baseball team to Monte Carlo Fund raisers to a convivial irreverence that infects the club. A good time was had by all.

Representatives of Canine Companions, a national organization, spoke to the club about their program to provide trained dogs to support people with a wide range of disabilities. Since 1975, they have placed 8,500 dogs and in just 2025, they placed 603. They described their training programs and some of the ways the dogs will interact to help--from calming a child having an anxiety episode to waking a veteran from a PTSD dream. Really a remarkable program! They even brought a dog in training, "Darryl" to demonstrate some commands.

Chris Bock shared the remarkable story of his family who escaped from German during WWII and detailed in his self-published book called "An Ordinary Man". The book and his presentation focuses on the life of his uncle, who in both luck and good decisions, managed to get himself and much of his family to China where he became an ophthalmologist. You have to read the book to get the whole story. But Chris shared enough to whet our appetite for more of this amazing tale.
