Announcements

Wendy Irving announced that the Pacheco Plaza Theater move (move of chairs) will be on September 23 and asked for help.

Jerry Ghirardo reminded us about the Rotary Foundation Raffle for a 3-Year Lease of a new BMW.  The donation for the Raffle goes toward your Paul Harris.  Jerry also mentioned the upcoming District event, "Blue Angels Brunch and Sail "on October 8th.  Tickets are going fast, see Jerry if you are interested or go to the District website.

Roland Fuette announced that the date for "Family Day" has been moved from September 24th to May 6th.  Apparently the park is under construction in preparation for our club and it will take them eight months in prepartion..  Roland also mentioned that the "Fireside" on Sept. 14th (next week) would be in the parking lot behind Forks and Fingers.  The main dish is Paella and Matt does a great job based upon past performances.  Starting around 5:30 PM.  Reminder, we are dark next week at Inn Marin because of the Fireside later that evening.

Fine Time

Greg Call, Fran O'Brien, Stan Warner, and Rich Ronsheimer were all recognized for their club anniversaries in September.  I question the September 1st dates, but what do I know (I know it was a Thursday in September)

Anna and Bernie Levinson celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in Japan.  Congratulations!

Bob Finer, Jerry Ghirardo, and Larry Levy all celebrated birthdays.  We did not get the birthday song right the first time, so we did it again!  Happy birthday to all.

Speaker/Program

Catheryne DiPrete introduced the speaker, Richard Torney the Great Grandson of the Past Surgeon General of the United States, George Torney.  His topic was the 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco.

George Torney was the Hospital Commander of the Hospital at the Presidio during the earthquake.  Because of the damage from the quake the hospital had all of its medical supplies destroyed and no water.  The threat to the city was disease.  250,000 or 50% of the population was homeless due the quake and fire.  Overall, they were successful in keeping disease to a minimum.

Richard had great photos of the City just after the quake showing the homeless and the destroyed buildings.  The City was very corrupt.  One example of this was that the walls of City Hall were filled with manure instead of the material that was supposed to be used.  The contractor was paid of course!

At the end of the program, our own Pastor Stan mentioned that San Francisco now has reservoirs below the streets so in the event of a fire; the water can be pumped out.  This was not the case in 1906 as the City was destroyed more by fire than by the quake due to broken water lines.  Great Program.

Raffle

Rob "the Griz" Sundberg but not the right marble.

Wendy Irving announced that the ticket booth was busy at Labor Day on last Sunday and recognized Tony Elshout, Melissa Rinck, Jack Marshall, Pauline Stuber, Jay Irving, Pres. Larry and Ramona Curtis, Gary Gast, and Dean Moser for working the booth and making it another successful event.  (My apologies if I left someone out.)
