“Do the right thing, do the thing right ….. and have FUN doing it!”
MEETING MINUTES September 21, 2006 at Inn Marin, Ignacio Submitted by Peter Pelham The meeting was called to order by the President Larry Curtis. Pledge led by Luann Jackman and the Invocation by Rev. Stan Warner gave the invocation with the word for the day- “Beware the fury of a patient man” (I am not sure what that means?). Visiting Rotarians Judy Peck (Harbor, San Rafael Club) Guests Pat Merrill, our guest speaker (introduced by Larry Levy) Roberta DiPrete introduced her daughter Camille and friend Leslie – (they are participating in a car wash at San Marin High School parking lot this Saturday. Roberta was planning on throwing dirt on everyone’s car after the meeting!) Gary Mills, a former ADG who just moved to Ignacio (introduced by Fran O’Brien) Deanna Wichman-Ford (introduced by proud papa, Don Wichman) Daryl introduced Anna Levinson’s better half, Bernie, President of the Bernie Levinson Wine Club Announcements Larry Curtis There was a good turnout for the fireside paella party behind Forks and Fingers last Thursday. Besides great food, wine and company, we had the pleasure of playing on reconditioned pinball machines. NOTE: several members signed up and did not show. In addition to a public flogging at the next meeting, the offenders will be charged for the meeting. Yesterday the club board agreed that you can cancel up to 3 days prior to an event but then we are committed financially to a caterer. Paul Hutcheson: “Mr Advance” announced that there will be a Rotary supplement in his esteemed paper on November 1st. This supplement highlights our 3 Novato clubs and their efforts. The cost of this is underwritten by advertising from members. Rates will be set at the Advance’s cost and 10% of the proceeds will be given back to Rotary. With a circulation of 10,500 households in Novato, it’s a deal not to be missed. Catheryne DiPrete: On behalf of Susan Gilmore, Catheryne is bringing to our attention that North Bay Children’s Center has some publicity in the Pacific Sun this week and also distributed a flyer on their signature event – A Night in Tuscany on October 13th (It’s a golf tournament as well but I am not sure how they can see the ball at night?). Susan…..major fine coming your way. Bob Carpenter: Its Wine Tour time on October 21st with a tour to the Dry Creek area and dinner at Le Cocos in Santa Rosa. 20 people signed up at the meeting and capacity is only 35 so better sign up soon. The cost is $65 per person which includes dinner and yodeling with Garry Gast. Rev. Stan was on a roll today. He is offering a spare room in his home for wayward members, estranged husbands, troublesome kids. Jim Picchi was going to sign up and tell Stan that it is only for a few days at a time. Great gesture – thank you Stan. Pres. Larry mentioned that Rotary International nominated the International President for 2008-9. He is a South Korean named Dom Kum Lee aka “DK”. Wendy Irving is looking for volunteers for the median strip clean up on Sept 30th. Lunch will be served afterwards. Also, this Saturday, some people are needed to help the Novato Theatre move chairs. Pres. Larry mentioned that the club/Foundation raised $11,000 for Katrina. Along with district funds and other clubs donations, $170,000 was sent to Slidell, a town completely devastated by Katrina. Jerry Ghirardo talked about the District event on October 8th – Brunch and Sail on the Hornblower watching the Blue Angels. Cost is $125 per person and $75 for children under 7 years old. The district raffle is a good way to meet your Paul Harris commitment of $100 and perhaps win a prize. Jerry also honored our two new Paul Harris recipients: Anna Levinson and Deanna Wichman-Ford. Fine Time No recognition from the Griz but GO BEARS anyway. Speaker/Program Catheryne DiPrete introduced Pat Merrill, Director of “Blind and Vision Impaired of Marin” BVIM has been in Marin for 32 years helping people that have become visually impaired. Typically their clients are 55 to 95 years old and used to having lived a sighted life so they are resistant to learning Braille or getting a guide dog. There are many resources out in the community –VIST helps veterans; Lighthouse provides orientation and mobility training; and Marin Center for Independent Living helps with home adjustments. Marin County will be the oldest county in California by 2020 with a median age of 47.7. Lighthouse did a recent survey and found that there are 5,000 visually impaired people in Marin. Vision loss can mean isolation for the individual. BVIM provides the following services: 1) Participation (monthly luncheons, support groups and outings to museums and other events) 2) Classes such as art 3) CCTVs which allow members to read with larger print 4) Advocates for the disabled (ADA Committee representative, letters to newspaper editors and public forums) 5) Community Outreach (Health Fairs etc) Events upcoming: A senior Health Fair October 11th, 9.30-3pm at the Civic
Center How you can help: Tell people about BVIM’s resources Not sure who won the raffle. ?¯?¯?¯?¯?¯?¯?¯?¯ Do the right thing
