“Do the right thing, do the thing right ….. and have FUN doing it!”
MEETING MINUTES October 19, 2006 at Inn Marin, IgnacioSubmitted by Don Wichman
The meeting was called to order by the President Larry Curtis at 12:22 pm. At about 12:30 pm the meeting adjourned for a group picture for the Novato Advance. About 10 pictures were taken, so look for us on the Internet in “Rotary Gone Wild”. Pledge led by Don Wichman for the second week in a row. It must be the “Dean Moser” look. Rev. Stan Warner gave the invocation with the word for the day (which most members understood). Visiting Rotarians Our master of introductions, Bill Kelly, did the introductions of the visiting Rotarians: Frank Falzon of Novato (our speaker), Dean Hefflefinger of Novato (past president), Lisa Fish of Novato (spouse of PDG), Darcy Quinn of Novato, Keith Schoenthal of Mission San Rafael and John Benus of Fairfax. GuestsPeter Pelham introduced his guest, Michael Bessblievre and Garry Gast introduced his better half, Lori Gast and his first Half, Garry Gast (his father). AnnouncementsBob Carpenter announced that there were still seats available for the Wine Tour on Saturday, October 21. The bus will leave the parking lot at Ignacio Safeway at 10 am sharp. If you have not paid, bring your $65.00 a person. It looks to be a great day of fun. Bob C. also announced that the Interact is still collecting used toner cartridges from computer printers and faxes. The Interact will take the cartridges to the recycle center for raising funds for their trip to Mexico to build houses in April, 2007. Because our attendance at meetings has been slipping, President Larry reminded members to make up their meetings either two weeks before or two weeks after a missed meeting. When you make up the meeting, please advise Marie Borders, preferably by email, of your make up. President Larry also announced that there will be a fine for arriving late to our regular meetings. The fine will be $5.00. The meeting is scheduled to start at 12:15 pm. President Larry was on a roll. He also announced that if a member has missed two meetings in a row, then the member’s badge will be pulled from the case and held hostage until the member either informs him of the makeup or pays the missed meeting fine. To this announcement, Jim Picchi (our club rebel) replied, “I never wear the d—n badge anyway. President Larry announced that Rotary is divided into World Zones by Rotary International. Kind of like the Pope giving Brazil to Portugal and the rest of the New World to Spain. Our Club and our District is in Zone 23. There was a Zone 23 Institute Meeting in which only prestigious Rotarians attend (past presidents, DGs, etc.) Attending for our Club and District was our won Past District Governor (PDG) Michael Fish. Also attending the Zone meeting was our current Rotary International President. At the meeting many programs were discussed that included the global needs for clean water, sanitation and literacy projects. The World Health Organization was on hand to commend Rotary for its work on the eradication of polio. Michael reported on several other topics, but your newsletter author could not keep up with Michael. Fine Time The Griz was on vacation (cruising in Mexico) so the Cubbie (Daryl Weinroth) stepped in for the Griz. Cubbie immediately swatted Jerry Ghirardo for Laura’s birthday. Cubbie scratched and clawed at Larry Levy for Hiloah’s birthday that Larry claimed he ad already paid for. Cubbie bit President-elect John Marshall for his induction into the club. Cubbie then called upon the club rat, Dean Moser, who truned on his swimming compadre, Catheryne DiPrete. Catheryne swam the Tiburon Mile on October 1 and placed second in her age category (about 100 swimmers). Dean placed 11th out of 14 swimmers in his age category (70+?). This author did not see any money come out of the rat’s victim, so maybe we need a new club rat. Cubbie tried to scratch money out of Shelley Klaner for advertising flyers that were displayed on the tables. Go Bears. Speaker/Program Our Speaker, Frank Falzone was introduced to the club. Frank served 28 years on the San Francisco Police Department as a homicide detective. Frank has been involved in some pretty infamous cases such as the Moscone murder and Juan Corona serial killings. Frank is a past president of the Novato Rotary Club. Frank’s topic was “The Lighter Side of Homicide”. He discussed several cases with the club. One case included an opinionated Tug Boat Captain on a jury. The captain already had his verdict before the defense presented its case. Another case included an abused wife who accidentally shot and killed her husband on Thanksgiving Day and was never arrested. The third case Frank discussed involved helping the Yuba City police with the Juan Corona case that somehow resulted in his partner and Frank going to Italy. And the last case discussed involved a Hell’s Angles hit man who killed two men and kept flashing his tattoo at Frank during the trial. The tattoo was on the inside of the defendant’s lip and was not very nice. Raffle After six attempts at drawing the winning number (six tickets drawn), our own President Larry had the winning number. However, he pulled a clear marble (loser).
