MEETING MINUTES October 14, 2004 at The Buck Center, NovatoSubmitted by Suzanne Bales Welcome to the gorgeous Buck Center. Thanks to member Susan Jacobson for opening doors and arranging all the details. Box lunches awaited us, arranged by John Marshall. Dining was held in the gorgeous courtyard center of the Buck Center.
President Gary opened the meeting with Dick OBrien leading the pledge. Being resourceful, the itty bitty flag was held in hand by Bob Finer, but the sentiment was the same.
Visiting Rotarians After the lunch in the courtyard, the meeting moved into the theater. President Gary introduced George Landow from Tiburon. Roteracters were also present, Bill Doughty Jr., yes can see the family resemblence, Kit McNeil(?) and Mike Cook. Bill Doughty Jr announced he was making the rounds of clubs to recruit potential new members to Roteract. Plus Bill Jr mentioned he enjoyed the free lunch-true Doughty!
GuestsBill Kelly introduced his lovely better half JoAnn. They celebrated her birthday by going out to dinner. Pastor Stan accompanied his better half Helen. Next April they will celebrate 59 years of marriage. Pastor Stan mentioned they married on his birthday, better to remember such important things as wedding anniversaries.
Peter introduced Art Wasserman while Chiding Chidlaw introduced “almost” Rotarian Dennis. He, according to Chidlaw, is shark in training.
A thank you too to Forks and Fingers for the box lunches. Thanks to John Marshall for arranging the grub.
President Gary did thank Bob and Fred for a great fun wine tour.
AnnouncementsPresident Gary again reminded everyone of the Hiller event, November 6th. For the first 10 that sign up the club will pay half the cost (42.50 of the 85). A reminder too the club will be dark that Thursday, November 6th. All kinds of ways to get there. Terra Linda is chartering a bus to make it really really easy!
Save December 3rd, says Fred. Christmas party at Marin Country Club with all three Novato Rotary clubs.
Shark Time A rather sedate time, as evidenced by being in a hall of learning. Greg did step up to the plate and fine himself for his picture in the paper. He, as Susan Jacobsen’s guest, attended the Buck Gala . He looked quite debonair in black tie. He also mentioned he was at the top of the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge last week-30 mile per hour winds meant a great great view.
Marie Borders announced she is now the owner with hubby Jeff of Fitwize 4 Kids, located in the San Marin shopping center. All invited to the grand opening October 19th 5:30PM. This is for kids 6-14. The exercise equipment is designed especially for them.
Since, in this hall of knowledge, the shark was subdued and taking very little money, Bruce Moeller stated his birthday was October 5th. His spousal equivalent (what the heck is that?) gave him a b day party. He is still recovering from the agony of the Giants defeat and end of season.
Speaker Susan Jacobsen spoke briefly on the Buck Center. They do offer weekly tours to the public. The institute receives 15%, approximately $6 million, from the Buck Trust. Half of the budget comes from the NIH. Currently have 12 labs and will be expanding. Susan introduced our speaker, Dr. Al Fisher, MD, PhD. He does see patients at the VA in San Francisco as well as doing research as the center.
He discussed the biology of aging. Simple manipulations can alter aging such as caloric restriction. Dr. Fisher studies a microscopic worm, less than the size of a flea. Its life cycle goes from a egg to adult in 3 days. Since they offer a 2-3 week life span and are easy to grow they offer a wealth of research information.
He studies sarconpenia, the loss of muscle mass using these worms. From this syngery of patient research and basic biology he hopes to stack the deck in favor of human advancement.
