MEETING MINUTES November 9, 2006 at Inn Marin, Ignacio

Submitted by Fran O’Brien

The meeting was called to order by the President Larry Curtis at 12:20 pm.

Pledge led by Stan Dennison and Pastor Stan Warner gave the invocation.

Visiting Rotarians

Garry Gast introduced the visiting Rotarian Kay Jones in Education from the Novato Club and Past District Governor Fred West, who was also our speaker.

Guests

Guests of Riotarians were Henning Van Deusen, guest of Jack Marshall and John Griffin, guest of Fran O'Brien.

Announcements

Wendy Irving, our Community Service Chair, announced that we are collecting donations for Holiday Share, which is distributed through Novato Human Needs Center.  Through Holiday Share a number of members have volunteered to sort food for distribution at the Center.  Art Wasserman is heading up our annual Food Bank session where we will fill boxes for distribution to needy families for the holidays.  The date is Sunday, December 17th from 5-7PM followed by a meal somewhere.  Volunteers are needed and an email will be forthcoming.

President Larry announced the January 3rd dinner at the Marriott Hotel in San Jose to meet the new Rotary International President.  More info later.

Jerry Ghirardo announced that the Silent Auction Price collection is now officially underway and donation forms were distributed.  Jerry will be collecting the prizes - so contact him for further information.  He also announced that major beneficiaries of the proceeds from Monte Carlo will be asked to bring in prizes and sell tickets.  He already has over $1,000 in prizes - our goal is to make $22,000 on Silent Auction tables - more is OK too.  We will have both high end auction table items and lower end items, some of which will be given as raffle ticket prizes.  Table Sponsorship forms will be available in the near future.  Watch for emails.  REMEMBER TO CONTACT your donors from previous years.

Fran O'Brien presented a flag from the McMinnville Rotary Club located in the Willamette Valley Wine Country of Oregon and we are all invited to visit them when in the area.  Their major fundraiser is an auction featuring general items as well as wine, dinner is served and they raise well over $100,000.00 !!!!

A short informational video of the charms of Salt Lake City and Utah was shown - Salt Lake is the site of the 2006 Rotary International Convention.  Fran O'Brien has some rooms at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center and at Little America Hotel, both of which are in the central part of the city and close to the Convention Center.

Prez Larry again read from the Novato Advance, something about former member, Bill Cope and a lot of bull - or was it bulls?  If this keeps up we may be able to cancel our subscriptions to the Advance and Paul wouldn't like that.

Pauline Stuber announced there would be a short World Service Committee meeting after our meeting.

Big surprise - Stan Warner needs more cars!!! The last one went to a student in Oregon.

Fine Time

The Griz pegged Prez Larry for his 43rd wedding anniversary.  Tony Elshout paid a paltry sum for his new Mercedez and taking up more than one parking space.  Apparently this vehicle is equipped with everything - wonder if Don Antonio knows what to do with all the bells and whistles.

Go Bears.

Speaker/Program

Our Speaker was Fred West, Past District Governor.  He is Membership Chair for our District and he commenced with some of his famous jokes.  His topic was Membership and he emphasized how important Rotary contacts can be for both personally and in our business.  In order to gain 10% more members a Club has to bring in 20% as there can be quite an attrition rate.  He suggested getting a list of the Chamber of Commerce members and have our members identify and contact people they know.  The Belmont Club has had great success with this method having added 9 new members since July.  Also, he suggested we just "ask people" but keeping in mind it's not the quantity but the quality of new members which is important.

Raffle

Rich Ronsheimer had the lucky ticket, but I don't think the ticket was lucky enough to win a prize.

Do the right thing

Monte Carlo update:  The donor forms are available.  Start collecting the silent auction items and get them to Jerry Ghirardo as soon as possible.

Do the thing right

Thank you Fran for taking the notes for this bulletin – and Garry Gast has volunteered for the meeting on the 16thJ

Having FUN doing it!

I am way behind in bulletins and member spotlight so the answer to the questions from October 19’s question is:  Matt Pavone, Art Wasserman and Michael Fish.  (If I missed anyone, I apologize, however I did not receive your member information.)

And if you forgot the questions it was:  We have three of our members who are extra excited about Monte going to Manhattan because they were born in New York.  Can you guess who?
