Rotary Trivia
President Larry told a football joke having to do with the coin flip – fans chanting, “Get the quarterback!” It’s only a quarter – duh!
Stan Warner also told a joke – not about cars – so missed the punch line.
President Larry asked who Arch C. Klumpf was. Jerry Ghirardo correctly guessed “Founder of the Rotary Foundation.” Arch initiated the first Rotary grant - to build an outhouse in downtown Chicago. Arch was also President of Rotary International.
Jerry Ghirardo announced that November is Rotary Foundation Month. The Foundation helps fund and support worldwide projects. $100/year maintains your sustaining membership and you can check with Jerry or Joyce (at his office) on how your donations are doing. Fine Time The Griz: 1. Lori Gast and Lisa Fish both celebrated birthdays. 2. Don Wichman’s daughter, Misty, made the Varsity Basketball Team, as a freshman, at St. Vincent’s High School. 3. Paul Hutchinson returned from a hunting trip in eastern Oregon – shot ducks (boo hoo), grouse, and used falcons for hunting, too – all in a new 4-door Tundra! 4. Spanky Pitchford’s wife, Vicki, celebrated her 50th birthday in Maui. She recently ran a marathon in Victoria, B.C. for the Arthritis Foundation. While in Maui, they attended the Lahaina Rotary Halloween Parade – Spanky wondered if it qualified as a make-up. Go Bears. Speaker/Program Roberta DiPrete introduced our speaker, Ray Bonneau, M.D. and his assistant. Ray is a longtime orthopedic surgeon in Marin who had treated Roberta’s daughter for leg fractures. His topic was joint replacement for the hip and knee.
Hip and knee replacement is done as a last resort when crippling arthritis or complete loss of cartilage (bone on bone) occurs. Joint replacement today is fairly common and with minimally invasive procedures: a) smaller incisions b) smaller instruments c) less pain and anesthetics
Hip surgery is usually 2-3 hours. The implants are now porous and uncemented as opposed to previously cemented implants. They can last the rest of the patient’s life. Knee surgery uses a polyethylene bearing which is easy to replace if it wears out. It has a lifetime guarantee. Patients are up and walking the day after surgery. . 3-4 days in the hospital . 6 weeks with a cane . 3 months, you’re golfing . 6 months, you’re hiking and even skiing
They now have prosthesis for both male and female, since the femurs are different size and shape. Raffle Someone pulled the marble out of the hat – but not the right one.
