MEETING MINUTES March 23, 2006 at Inn Marin, Ignacio

Submitted by Don Wichman

Meeting was called to order by President Tony Elshout, who asked Stan Dennison to lead us in the Pledge and Pastor Stan give the invocation and thought for the day.  Pastor Stan also blessed the chicken that was residing in our stomachs.

Visiting Rotarians

Our fellow Rotarians were announced quickly by Fran O’Brien:

Larry Walters from the Palau Club (of “Survivor” fame), Augi Hoth, David Kapranos, Kay Jones and Sarah Panyard all from Novato and J.R. Hastings for Central Marin (and our speaker for the day).

Guests

Our lone guest of the day was Thomas Asaro of the Bank of the West.  Thomas was a guest of Marie Borders.

Announcements

Sarah Panyard nannounced a Marin Symphony Benefit presenting a performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” on May 20, 2006 at 1:00 pm.

Steve Minutoli announced that we are short ten people to donate blood for the annual blood drive next week.

The 30-year anniversary party was somewhat announced via a “special Pfeiffer” flyer.  We think the party is scheduled for April 29, Saturday with drinking to start at 6:00 pm at Inn Marin.  Fred quickly passed around the sign-up sheet.

Michael Fish, chair of the District Conference reminded members of the conference.  Registration forms have been emailed to all members.

Fine Time

Woodchuck and Bear shared the duties today.  The bear picked on poor Fred Pfeiffer for his special rendition of a flyer announcing our 30th year party at Inn Marin.

The Woodchuck, who was acting more like a Wolverine, quickly brought President Elect Larry Curtis to his feet to fine him for Ramona’s birthday.  All we could ascertain was that it was Ramona’s 39th or 43rd birthday.  Larry did lunch with Ramona and swept her off to Scottsdale, AZ.

Bill Doughty was fined for his wedding anniversary with Alison.

Dean Moser was fined for Michele’s birthday.  Dean “deep pockets” Moser substituted Michele’s Valentines Day gift for her birthday gift.  Then Dean took Michele to Lake Tahoe.  Woodchuck pointed out to Dean, from past experience, that he once did a present substitution with his ex-wife.

Pauline Stuber, former editor, apologized for not doing the bulletin last week and paid a hefty fine and must now subscribe to the national Enquirer.

Greg Chidlaw fessed up to the big “50” and celebrated with a birthday dinner with lots of old guys.

And finally, Melissa Rinck was nicked for her induction date.

Then the Woodchuck went back into his hole.

Speaker/Program

The speaker for the day was J.R. Ewing, oops, I mean J.R. Hastings, an Attorney at Law.  J.R. has been an Air Force pilot and a pilot for 14 years with United Airlines.  No one asked J.R. how he went from being a pilot to being an attorney?

J.R.’s topic was about a [perfect flight that took place on December 29, 2005 from somewhere to Honolulu.  He described how perfect the push off, take off, attaining altitude and landing was on that blissful day.  He also described how security is just as tight for a pilot as it is for passengers.

J.R. did leave our club with some interesting information.  The jets today use fan engines propelled by jet engines.  The engines of yesterday were plain old jet engines.  Take off and attaining altitude is entirely controlled by a computer and an in-cabin printer.  All the jets today use GPS.  Today’s jets can only fly 2 hours on one engine without stopping.

Raffle

I think Greg attempted to win the pot – however I think it is still available.
