MEETING MINUTES July 1, 2004 at Inn Marin, Ignacio Submitted by Phil Snell President Garry Gast duly opened our meeting with the pledge of allegiance, and called upon Reverend Stan Warner to provide the thought for the day. Special Announcement In the changing of the guard, new Past President Peter Pelham thanked Shelley Klaner for organizing the debunking party, Larry Curtis for commandeering the catering, Roland Fuette for reserving the Bahia clubhouse, and Chuck Swenson for writing the entertainment. President Peter thanked those Ignacio Rotarians whom he was unable to thank at the debunking for their service last year: Greg Call for serving as Secretary, Dick O’Brien for setting up the weekly meetings and storing the meeting equipment, Pauline Stuber for obtaining the Woburn scholarships, Fran O’Brien who served as speaker chair, Dean Moser, Mr. Monte Carlo, Greg Chidlaw fine master, and Luann Jackman, bulletin editor. Tony Elshout announced that the latest photos from the debunking party are now on the website. Announcements For your calendar: On July 22, 2004, new District Governor Eric Shapira will be speaking at our club meeting. In keeping with tradition, we would appreciate all members to calendar this meeting as a must-attend meeting. We traditionally have 100% attendance for the new district governors’ meetings. On September 19, 2004, a Rotoplast fundraiser in the form of a bocce ball tournament will take place in San Rafael, more specifics will be forthcoming. On November 6, the Rotary International Foundation will meet at the Aviation Museum in San Carlos from 6–8:30 p.m. Daryl Weinroth announced the centennial project in which our club will be involved with the two other Novato Rotary clubs, Novato Rotary and Novato Sunrise, as well as the Rotaract club. The project is the removal and replacement of the tot lot at San Miguel Park. The demolition of old equipment will begin from 9 til noon on July 10. All are required to attend. Greg Chidlaw has been appointed new Monte Carlo Night chairman. Greg will have a full exposition of his plans for the next Monte Carlo Night, March 2005, at the July 15 club meeting. Greg announced that the club owns a URL, rotarymontecarlo.org, which will enable guests to buy tickets online. Shark Time Bob Kane was recognized for his excursion to the Camaya resort in New Mexico, where he spent one week, including attending Edie’s family reunion. Bill Kelly celebrated his 43rd anniversary with Joanne attending the Buddy Holly stage play and purchasing a purple recliner with a built-in beer chest. Dick and Fran O’Brien celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Portland and a spinout on Highway 5 in Corning. July 2nd was Chuck Swenson’s birthday. Greg Childlaw celebrated his 30th high school reunion in Chowchilla. Matt Wilson celebrated his 10th anniversary on June 10th. Speaker Garry Gast announced his new board members. He also has lined up a tot park replacement, which would involve our club dismantling a play structure and installing a new play structure and new groundcover. Fred Pfeifer, Club Service Committee Chair, announced the wine tour scheduled for October 9; the bocce ball tournament/Rotoplast fundraiser; and four firesides coming up for the year. Gina Grant, International Service Committee Chiar, announced that Larry Levy will be working on the International Wheelchair Project. Project Amigo will be advanced with college fundraising for the children matriculating from the school in Colima. We will be in partnership with the Novato club to develop the sewage system for the Copper Canyon, Mexico village. The committee will also advance the San Felipe eye project for children in San Felipe, Mexico, to provide prescription glasses. The committee will be involved in the Rotoplast project slated for El Salvador. Luann Jackman, Youth Services Committee Chair, will be sponsoring the Toys for Tots program in December, providing a Rotary scholarship for a college student and exploring our involvement in a future exchange program. President Garry Gast announced that Monte Carlo Night will be our main focus beginning with our next meeting, in an endeavor to raise $100,000 for charitable organizations in Novato. The Rotary District Conference will take place in Asilomar in June. Garry also invites all interested to join the International Fellowship of Skiing Rotarians on a ski trip to Canada this winter. The Rotary International convention will take place in Chicago in June, with an anticipated 100,000 Rotarians attending. Act now to reserve accommodations.
