The television special, "Service Above Self," is a look at Rotary's success as one of the world's largest club-based humanitarian organizations as it approaches its February 2005 centennial. The program was produced by Horizons Communications Group, a documentary production agency. "Service Above Self" examines Rotary's roots in downtown Chicago. The organization's first service project was the purchase of a horse so a local physician could make house calls. Soon after, the club sponsored the construction of Chicago's first public "comfort station" (restroom). Rotary expanded rapidly over the 20th century and played a major role in such historic events as the founding of the United Nations. The hour-long documentary highlights several key Rotary programs, including the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Through the PolioPlus campaign, Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Rotarians and people, who have benefited from Rotary's educational opportunities, including film critic Roger Ebert, appear on camera to explain how Rotary has affected their lives. Horizons Communications Group's last major documentary, "The Hunger Heroes," was nominated for an Emmy Award and received a Gracie Allen Award. Need to make up a missed meeting?
