MEETING MINUTES, 31 January, 2008 at Inn Marin, Ignacio

Submitted by Charles Swensen

January is Rotary Awareness Month

The fifth meeting of the new year our president, John, called the meeting to order at about 12:30.  Following the pledge (led by Peter Pelham, does anyone else find it ironic to throw the British out only to have them return to lead the pledge?).  In the absence of Larry Levy, Fran gave the thought for the day, concerning appreciating those around us…

Announcements

-President John Marshall thanked the hosts for last week’s fireside.  .

- Dean Heffelfinger announced his clubs polenta feed

- Judy Peck announced the San Rafael club’s raffle, $50 per ticket for a shot at a dining package from several local restaurants.

- President John Marshall read a note from the Novato Youth Center thanking us for our holiday luncheon for the kids.

-Mike Fish gave an update for Monte Carlo and pushed all to get going on auction items and tickets.  A PR photo will be taken at his wife’s studio (Captured Memories on Grant Street) Monday at three.

Marie Borders sponsored Irv Hirsh’s induction into the club and received a gold ‘prospector’s pin from Fran for her efforts.  Welcome aboard, Irv.

Fines:

- Paul Hutcheson (declared old by Daryl on the dubious criteria that he is older than Daryl) celebrated his birthday and was also recognized for assuming leadership of the Chamber of Commerce.

Phil Snell (also older than Daryl) also had a birthday and went out to dinner with is wife.

- Dallas Hickle celebrated his wife’s birthday, also going out to dinner (are we Rotarians going to get out of this dinner rut?).

Fran O’Brian missed her word sequacious, not realizing that Daryl thinks Dick is servile to her.

Speaker/Program

Dan Markovitz, gave an informative talk on ways we waste time.  He focused on three myths and how to avoid them:

1.       I’ll do it later.  Instead do one of four things with each task:

a.       Dump it

b.       Delegate it to someone else to do (so they can dump it?)

c.       Designate it (he means schedule it but that doesn’t start with a ‘D’).

d.       Do it now, for tasks that can be done quickly

2.       Get the easy stuff done first.  No, you just stretch out the time and never get around to the tough stuff.  (following this advice I’d have never passed a college course.  I only got through exams by grabbing all the easy points I could).

3.       Jump to provide service.  Interrupting what you are doing to answer an e-mail kills 25 minutes.  Check it twice a day, not each time one comes in.

Daryl objected to the whole concept of efficiency.  “If I could only bill thirty minutes to do a half hour’s work, I’d go broke.”
