Former “Shark” (we escape his wrath until after Monte Carlo night) gave a Monte Carlo update. Highlights included the live web site, over $50,000 in Live Auction action and seven committed “dine-around” restaurants. Tickets due for distribution next week. Going for $100,000!

President Garry reminded us that after we complete our Monte Carlo project, the focus is on membership. Start thinking of potential new members to invite to our club.
Recent Rotary returnee Art Wasserman gave us a four-minute (not five) profile of his life. As many of your know, Art is a CPA, living in San Anselmo with wife Jessica (two children Ben and Samantha are lurking around somewhere). After escaping Brooklyn early in life, Art had a rather “checkered career” before he settled in our area in 1971. Originally joined Rotary in 1977 and is a Past President of our club. Says he is back for good and he is welcomed!
Recognition
Welcome to the interim “Recognition Man”, Daryl Weinroth. A lot more palatable than the Shark, I believe. He is out to get you if you don’t mingle so move that “keister” around or face the music.
Singled out were “old Garry” on his 60th as well as Marie, Catherine and Susan for various transgressions.
Bruce informed us that our Disaster Relief Fund produced $5,150, hmmm, interesting number. Speaker Catherine Munson introduced out guest speaker Larry Levy (notorious salad eater) to talk about Labor and Employment Law.
Just kidding, Larry spared us and enlightened us on a wonderful project, The Wheelchair Foundation. A collaborative effort with Rotary and the Foundation has caused over 160,000 wheelchairs to be delivered to needy recipients in over 100 countries. Larry is urging the clubs of Novato to sponsor a container load at a cost of $21,000 (matched by The Foundation). That delivers 280 chairs! We can “Make a Difference” so give Larry your donation form as soon as possible. Larry was already collecting forms and checks at the meeting so let’s all pitch in as $21,000 is “chump change”. This is compelling stuff!

International Dalai Lama Headlines Centennial Event of India club 11 January 2005
A centennial event of the Rotary Club of Bangalore Midtown, Karnataka, India, that was more than one year in the making came to fruition when the Dalai Lama visited from his headquarters in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh.
The internationally revered Buddhist monk, Tibetan leader, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate delivered an inspiring keynote address on the theme of compassion and universal brotherhood and sisterhood to club members on 2 December 2004.
He praised Rotary's service to the needy, saying that he has met Rotarians from different parts of India in the course of his travels and spiritual activities.
"[Rotary] gives service to society," said the Dalai Lama. "I remember once [seeing] two handicapped people [who] were provided with wheelchairs [by Rotarians].... So I appreciate and admire your activities for the betterment of society."
The Dalai Lama said that acts of service should arise out of compassion, not ego, and that compassion worthy of the name must translate into action. He also said that world peace depends on a sense of universal brotherhood and sisterhood and collective responsibility for the well-being of individuals, society, and nature.
"Particularly in the modern times, everything is interconnected. [For example], our interests and others' interests are interlinked. Asian interests are linked with Western interests. So the whole group is just one entity, just like one body," he said. "Taking care of others is not necessarily holy but a realistic way of approach about one's own interest. Therefore, taking care of another is like taking care of yourself."
In an address welcoming the Dalai Lama, District 3190 Governor S.R. Yogananda said that the host Rotarians were fortunate to have the Tibetan leader in their midst. He pointed out similarities between the ideals that inspire Rotarians and Buddhists to help the needy.
Bangalore Midtown club president Kiran Boal, who introduced the Dalai Lama, later said: "Rotarians were absolutely thrilled with the event. It was a rare opportunity, a once-in-a-lifetime type of an event. [We] were greatly honored by the address of the Dalai Lama. We truly felt blessed!"
Attendees also included a few Rotary district officers, club presidents, and invited guests.
