MEETING MINUTES December 28, 2006 at Inn Marin, Ignacio
(the last meeting of the year)

Submitted by Luann Jackman

President Larry Curtis opened the meeting by welcoming everyone.

The Club led themselves in the pledge.  Larry Levy asked for health for the entire club.

President Larry also shared a thought for the day – “Laughter is God’s sunshine”.

Visiting Rotarians

Grant Garl from Novato (did a PSA about his new work)

Special guest and visiting Rotarian:  Greg Malloy, PDG, Terra Linda

Guests

Hailey Sundberg, Rob Sundberg’s daughter, was his guest.

Announcements

President Larry thanked Fred Pfeifer for transportation for Santa and Greg Malloy for being Santa and Wendy Irving for all her work.  President Larry was disappointed and concerned about the turnout for the meeting.  Only 18 members showed up.

John Marshall shared about the save the date post cards that we can mail out to all our friends about Monte Carlo.  (Good job Rocky.)  John will be having tickets for us at our next meeting.  John also, promoted the Cabaret show at Inn Marin, with a 3-course meal with Rickey’s.

Novato Advance had a nice article about the late Pastor Stan.

Paul Hutchinson announced the Paint the Town Red Celebration at Stonetree on January 20, 2007.  This is the annual Novato Birthday Bash.  He also presented a $282.08 for our percentage of the ads in the Rotary section of the Novato Advance.  This year was the largest section ever produced.

Larry Levy updated the club on Bob Kane; he is healing from a new hip replacement surgery.  He and Eddie are down in the assisted living section of Villa Marin.  Eddie is also recovering from surgery.  He would love visitors.

We are partnering with Novato Theater Company for Monte Carlo, they are helping create the decorations for the event.  We will be having work parties in January and February.   The three dates in January are 6th, 13th and 20th.  There will two shifts each day, 9-11:30 am and 12:30 -3 pm.  Please sign up.

We have been asked to “pass the hat” to support the Rotary International Rose Parade float.

Jack Marshall shared a joke – something about bears and beers and bars.

The board of directors has decided that effective January 1 our weekly lunch fee will be $16 plus the non-eat people will have a $1 increase as well.

(Bob Finer will be doing his vocational talk next week.)

Fine Time

The Griz (Rob Sundberg) and the Griff (newest member John Griffin) recognized Shelley Klaner for Pete’s birthday.  She gave him a surprise party at Finnegan’s.

Today is Pauline Stuber’s lovely spouse’s birthday.  They were planning to go to his daughter’s house however John has a cold.

Paul Hutchinson gave a donation because of his good life.

Speaker/Program

Greg Malloy, long time Terra Linda Rotary member, past district governor joined us to make us laugh, introduce his wife Marsha, (who belongs to Novato Rotary) by photo and share some interesting information about being a Rotary Warrior.

He gave us a quiz to point out that we don’t always remember the headlines of the past.  However when asked about folks who are part of our lives, we can remember them.  The people who make a difference in our lives are the ones who care about us.

He also shared magic tricks with hankies and one with 3 ropes.  The true magic is getting involved in Rotary.

Greg also shared some of his stories about his time in Rotary and how special and important the opportunities he has had with Rotary.  There are many opportunities to be a “magician”.  And many lives have been changed, including his own.

His challenge to us is to bring Rotary to life for all of us, our families, friends and communities.  He shared that we are so close to eradicating Polio.

Thanked us again for letting him be Santa for us.

Raffle

The raffle was won by Rich Ronsheimer again – and again did not draw the correct marble.

Next week’s program will be about Novato’s economic future.  We will also induct Ron Weller at next week’s meeting.

Happy New Year to allHoping 2007 will be the best ever!

Do the right thing

President Larry recognized a couple of members with unique jobs on our board with a thank you and token of appreciation.  These are folks who have roles similar to their jobs.  Shelley Klaner is our PR person.  Bruce Moeller is our treasurer and is a CPA in real life.

Do the thing right

Thank you Luann for taking the notes for this bulletin.  J     Silly me

Having FUN doing it!

Get ready for Monte Goes to Manhattan.  So to have a bit of fun – periodically there will be a Monte Carlo question of the week.  The answer will be in the following newsletter.

So your first bit of trivia is:   Twenty years ago when the club sponsored it's first Monte Carlo, what were the proceeds used for?  According to Pauline Stuber the correct answer is:  Our first Monte Carlo Night was not 20 years ago, but going on 19 years ago.  Our next Monte Carlo in 2007 will be our 20th, but the first one was March 5, 1988 and was held to raise funds for Rotary International's Polio Plus program.  Our Club was assessed $30,000 toward the program to be raised over a three year period.  According to Rich Ronsheimer the correct answer is:  It was used to help fulfill the club's Rotary International Polio obligation. The obligation was a total of $45M over three years.

Either way – we have had a lot of fun and raised a lot of money!

This week’s question is:  What great program was a major benefactor of Monte Carlo for a few years after Polio Plus?

Member Spotlight –  Last week’s question was – In keeping with the holiday spirit – one of our members told me that his favorite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life.  Who do you think this is?

The answer is Rocky Cosgrove.

This week let’s spotlight the only member (who completed the form) who was born in a very snowing state these days, Colorado – who do you think this person is?
