MEETING MINUTES August 26, 2004 at Inn Marin, Ignacio

Submitted by Suzanne Bales

President Garry Gast opened with George Dray leading the pledge and Pastor Stan the invocation.

President Garry jumped the gun right into announcements but was quickly reined back to normal procedure.

Visiting Rotarians

Bill Kelly got this note taker totally distracted – he keeps greeting imaginary guest Novato Rotary Alan Dunham.  Does Bill have imaginary friends too?  Jim Spillman, Jim Current, George G? and Frank Falzone of Novato Rotary was left out accidentally.  He brought along much of Old Republic Title Company.

Guests

Tony Elshout brought as his guest Heidi McDonald, also of Old Republic Title Company.

Announcements

Tony Elshout requested workers On Sunday, September 5, for Labor Day at the Lake. There is talk about Novato Rotary providing the beer from their stand – that should get the volunteers!  We are still looking for volunteers from our club to sell tickets – now there is talk of free admission even more beer from the Novato Rotary stand and free meals.

Santiago Sosa mentioned the Chihuahuans are coming.  There will be (was) a potluck this Friday the 27th at the Ketrons of Novato Rotary.  See Santiago if interested.

Fred Pfeifer discussed the Bocce Ball tournament being held in San Rafael September 19th – benefits RotaPlast, of which our own Michael Fish is chair.  Not just Bocce Ball but silent auction, food, fun.  We have two teams looking for even more.

Susan Jacobsen discussed Monte Carlo, along of course with Greg Chidlaw.  Several shared commitments:  Michael Fish has obtained a fishing trip to San Felipe.  Bill Kelly browbeat his sons into providing abalone dinner for 8 (priceless!).  (Bill, get Alan Dunham to bid on it!)  Daryl Weinroth's client, a wine broker, is getting all kinds of great wine donated.  Dean Moser has a guitar from Carlos Santana, he is working on getting Santana to be at the event to help with the auction of the guitar -wow!  John Marshall has a 7-night package in Wailea -2 bedroom condo overlooking the water in Hawaii.  Susan Jacobson mentioned it isn't any more difficult to ask for a big prize vs small.  Excitement is brewing with these great prizes pouring in - go Monte Carlo go!!!!

President Garry reminded everyone to see Fran O'Brien for room reservations if attending the convention in Chicago.

October 9th wine tour – checks need to be to Bob Carpenter no later than September 16th.  32 have signed up already and 35 is the max so get going!  Money in Bob’s hand equals confirmed reservation.  Seats going fast.  $60 includes dinner at Deschimres.

Sept 10th is the Novato Rotary golf Tournament – dinner only is also available for non-golfers.  See John Marshall.  Dinner is at Novato Youth Center.

Pauline Stuber shared that the birthday party for Laura Wulbern went quite well.  4 out of 6 of the scholarship recipients attended.   Nice article about it in the Novato Advance.

Larry Curtis reminded everyone of the work party this Saturday – Ignacio Blvd median across from Westamerica Bank.  Inn Marin will provide coffee and snacks.

Daryl Weinroth reminded everyone our centennial project fixing up the Scottsdale Pond area is coming up.  It will be a large project involving all the Novato Rotary clubs.  He did comment that participation in service is what Rotary is all about.  You give what you get in terms of knowing Rotarians from other clubs. Involvement brings all kinds of rewards so use those sign up sheets!

Shark Time

Poor Daryl Weinroth, standing with empty pockets pulled out, got fined for little guy little fish syndrome.  Pictures had circulated among the tables.  A 4-inch fish across a 3-inch palm equaled $8.  Empty pocket Daryl was funded by bank Tony Elshout.  There was rumor those were the throw away fish and the big snappers were more than plentiful while he was down with family in Costa Rica.

Suzanne Bales returned from a 7-night seminar at sea – Caribbean Princess, a brand new ship.  Someone has to investigate these matters!

Kristi Blundon announced she and hubby Parke are moving to Boise Idaho to start a new business.  Since they will be near Sun Valley there was a general invitation.  Think the next Rotary ski event needs to make the trek.  We will miss her.

Luann Jackman and the Marin YMCA are being honored at the Spirit of Marin luncheon because the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce awarded the YMCA their large business of the year award this year.

Fidgeting Peter Pelham was recognized for his new Honda Accord.  He actually got it on debunking day. Shark Chidlaw tried to hit him up for even more since Peter had the audacity to goof up the system by not being fined for an anniversary!

Famous Holt was also dinged for his new mini cooper sitting out in the parking lot.

Speaker

Luann introduced speaker Dan Schaefer, Prada Group Inc.  He gave a comprehensive program about the future development Village at Novato and Atherton Place.  It will occupy the northern gateway area of Novato around Olive and Redwood.  It will be a planned residential and mixed-use area that will cover over 11 acres.

He promised energy and activity would be brought to Novato.  The mix will be high quality retail, obtainable housing, and work force apartments.  The completion of this, after getting past Bill Kelly and his design review board, will be hopefully early 2007.  Over 80,000 sq. feet of retail will be brought on line in a village atmosphere.
