Announcements

John Marshall asked that we take care not to park in the Rickey’s only parking areas.

Stan Dennison announced that the Cal-Ducks game on October 7 has less than needed for the bus.  He is going to open it up to the Novato Club.  There are also some others that already have the tickets that would ride the bus only.  Contact Stan if you want in on the fun.

Gary “Mr. Duck” Gast announced that the Bocce Ball Tournament for Rotaplast would be on Sunday, August 27 at Alberts Field in San Rafael.  Last year was a great time so this year should be great also. Contact Gary, Michael “the Gov” Fish or Fireman Fred Pfeifer.

President Larry filling in for Jerry Ghirardo (the announcement was shorter than it could have been, we did miss you Jerry!) wanted to remind everyone that the special Paul Harris match of $250 for those having $750 or greater towards their Paul Harris will expire on 9/10/06.  If anyone wants to take advantage of this very generous offer, please contact Jerry.

Fran “ Membership” O’Brien reminded us that August is Membership month and that it is a good time to bring guests to our meetings.  If the programs for the rest of the month are as good as it was today it will be a great time to bring a guest.

Stan “I need a Car” Warner needs another car.

President Larry showed an eight-minute video that was a great reminder of what Rotary is all about.  This was timely information for both members and guests present.

Fine Time

Rob “the Griz” Sundberg was in a money hungry mood: First he ordered Past President Pauline Stuber to her feet.  The problem is that Pauline just had knee surgery and could not stand.  He rebounded by having us sing happy birthday to Pauline.

The Griz was so rattled at this point, he actually fined himself for his anniversary.

Past President Tony “El Paseo” Elshout celebrated an anniversary and Sally’s birthday at El Paseo with great wine at 1970 prices.

Steve Minutoli remembers celebrating Sandy’s birthday by starting out for Bodega Bay.

Greg ”Mickey” Call paid for a Birthday and almost got away from paying for his trip to Disney World but the Griz got him.

Rocky “Mini Van” Cosgrove contributed for a new van.  Gary “Go Ducks” Gast paid all of his winnings last week just for winning.  This was and is a tough crowd.

Speaker/Program

Dave “Spanky” Pitchford introduced is nephew, Lieutenant Commander Fitzhugh “Dud” Lee.  Fitz flew a FA-18E Super Hornet over Iraq.  Dave said Fitz invited him to join the crew of the USS Ronald Regan from Honolulu to San Diego (Dave said it was one of the top ten experiences of his life).

The mission was to support ground forces against strikes.  Each mission was six and a half-hours long, required three refuelings (in the air about 2,000 gallons each time), one to three pit stops. Although the planes were armed with bombs and a cannon, the objective was to achieve their goal without air strikes.  The very dangerous part of the flight was the landing usually in the dark after much fatigue and hunger.  Each mission costs approx. $40M (for two aircraft).  Fitz says that there is good morale with the troops and the guys over there.  He says that even though all may personally have their own opinions, they perform their duties professionally.  He said that the great majority feels they are doing the right thing.  He also said that we are not seeing the positive things that are happening over there because of our presence.  He did say that this battle would be a long one.

Great Program!
